Most sand on Earth is made primarily of quartz because quartz is one of the hardest and most chemically stable minerals, so it survives weathering better than most rocks. Other common components can include feldspar, shell fragments, coral, volcanic rock, and iron-rich minerals, which give sand its different colors.
